History  -  Edgar Cayce (1877 - 1945)

Edgar Cayce was called "The Sleeping Prophet of Virginia Beach", and the New York Times once named him "the most fascinating man in America." (S.D.Kirkpatrick.Edgar Cayce:An American Prophet).  Eventually, he became the most documented psychic of all time and the 'readings'  have provided the basis for hundreds of books on the information he gave.

Even as a child, Cayce displayed powers of perception extending beyond the normal five senses. This talent continued into his adult life, were Cayce was able to give information about the many questions put to him. When individuals came to him with a question, he would place himself into a hypnotic state.  His responses were called "readings".  The first 100 or so of his reading were not recorded, but Gladys Davis his lifetime secretary, faithfully recorded the later ones . Today his psychic readings constitute one of the largest and most impressive records of intuitive information to emanate from a single individual.

Cayce was born on March 18, 1877 on a farm in rural Kentucky. At an early age he gave evidence of his talent. He told his parents that he could see and talk to 'visions'. Later he mastered his school lessons by sleeping on his books. At the age of twenty-one he developed a gradual throat paralysis which threatened the loss of his voice. When doctors were unable to find a cause for his condition, Cayce, encouraged by Al Layne, entered the same hypnotic state that had enabled him to learn his school lessons years before. While in that state, he recommend medication and manipulative therapy, which successfully repaired his throat muscles and restored his voice. It was soon discovered that he could do the same for others.

For many years the information given was for medical problems. Eventually the scope of his readings expanded to include such topics as meditation, spirituality, dreams, ESP and intuition,  reincarnation, ancient civilizations and prophecy and much more.   This vast body of information is now available, in it's entirety, on CD-ROM.

The A.R.E.®, Association for Research and Enlightenment, located in Virginia Beach, Virginia is the national headquarters of the Cayce material.   It was founded in 1931 and houses over 14,000 readings given between  1901 and 1945.
